The color of a house or building accounts for much of its appeal. Painters are tasked with the responsibility of painting these structures and making sure that the right tools are used and that finishes are put appropriately. If you want to become a painter someday, then you should look for companies with job vacancies for apprentice painters. Apprentice painters typically finish their apprenticeship in three years, after which they will become skilled painters.
Apprentice painters work under the supervision of skilled painters while aiding them in painting and decorating residential and commercial buildings as well as other structures. Apprentice painters are given tasks commensurate with their years of experience as apprentices. These tasks may include erecting ladders, cradles and scaffolding and placing sheets to protect various areas from dripping paint. Apprentice painters may also have to remove old wallpaper or paint from walls using blowtorches, scrapers, sanders, steam strippers or liquid paint removers. Applying paint and varnish to surfaces are also among the tasks done by apprentice painters. Apprentice painters may also be required to wash tools and equipment and make sure that their work areas are clean.
Apprentice painters are typically employed by painting and decorating contracting firms. Apprentice painters can also be hired by self-employed contractors. Those who want to become apprentice painters may also seek jobs with government agencies that deal with public works, railways and housing.
Apprentice painters have to be physically fit and able to work at heights as well as enjoy doing practical work to be excel in their job. It's important for apprentice painters to have normal colour vision so they can choose and mix colors well. Apprentice painters also need to have a good sense of balance and an eye for detail. Apprentice painters should know how to work independently and do well as part of a team.
Employment opportunities for apprentice painters are generally good, although these depend greatly on the level of renovation and building activity. Painting is a large occupation and many companies are hiring apprentice painters, so it's more likely that you won't have a hard time finding a job opening for apprentice painters. Once apprentice painters complete their apprenticeship, they can then become professional painters, and, with a little more experience, they may advance to supervisory positions.
